How Spiritual Direction Can Enrich Life
Is there anyone out there who doesn’t want love, peace and joy in their life?
Not that spiritual direction gives immediate love, peace and joy, but it’s often an outcome of it. How? Having compassionate, non-judgmental guidance enriches self-love. Finding greater purpose and meaning in life results in greater joy. Most struggles in life have roots in spiritual emptiness, growing in faith can bring peace in many areas of life.
The national news as well as our own personal headlines can be overwhelming, and life is often chaotic. There are so many choices of where to get help. But more choices are even overwhelming too. Having a spiritual director, like a guide in the forest or a language interpreter, can make all the difference. A one-on-one relationship with a spiritual director can begin or deepen understanding of your spiritual life.
Spiritual tourism is enlightening. One I my favorite sayings is, “All who wander are not lost.” But being lost isn’t much fun after a while. Spiritual direction often results in more enjoyment of the journey. We all need a place to rest and reflect on life’s journey and spiritual direction can provide this. It is that quiet space, that pausing, slowing down and sitting still that renews us.
Spiritual direction can also increase our participation in the world in positive ways. As we are filled with love, peace and joy, we spread it to others. As we face our struggles, we become sensitive to the plight of others. By integrating spiritual practices into daily life, the outcome spills over and into a hurting world. Maybe loving creation through community gardening or peacefully protesting gun violence or joyfully serving dinner to immigrant families are ways spirituality may take root in our lives.
While spiritual direction does not meet all needs, it does make life more loving, peaceful and joyful.
