At some quiet moment in life we have all wondered, “What’s the meaning of all this?” or “What am I here for?”
Spiritual Direction is an appointed time to reflect on these questions with a spiritually trained professional. Primarily, it is understood as a relationship between two people, centered in and open to the work of the Spirit, Higher Power or however you define the transcendent. It is an ancient practice that is seeing new life breathed into it. It’s not about being directed, as the ancient name suggests, but more life navigation or guidance in spiritual living. It sometimes called “spiritual companions” or “spiritual friends.” Spiritual Direction sounds like one knows the direction and is pointing it out without having developed a relationship with the directee (what a person in spiritual direction is referred to much like the term client or patient). More people understand what counseling is about—more problem/solution focused, and this can be misleading for those more attuned to what spiritual direction means. Spiritual Direction and Counseling is the name I chose to bring old and new together. In my practice the focus is on spiritual growth and development. It’s meant to focus on the personal relationship between you and God.
Over time, in spiritual direction and counseling, one may see the spiritual connections already present in life. This offers more support and encouragement in life. Spiritual Direction is a confidential place to discuss your spiritual journey. A session may include talking, silently listening, prayer, music, and other comfortable ways to explore spirituality. It’s a place you can ponder those questions and seek your spiritual path.
